In a universe where the law of probabilities points to the existence of millions, perhaps billions, of worlds inhabited by intelligent life, why is it that we can't find any?
So I meet this very strange girl under the mistletoe
at our office party tonight. She has ovoid green eyes with huge black pupils.
Also a pointed tongue. She is definitively not normal. I offer her
a ride home.
We hit the pavement. It's cloudy and cool outside. 'End of the World' weather.
She follows behind me. I stop at my car. She bumps full length, slow dance,
into me. Her breast hitting my arm. My nerves perceive this as shock treatment
and my hands drop the hot keys they've been clutching for the last 15 minutes.
I stoop to pick them up. She's still smiling.
I open the passenger door. She eases herself into the passenger seat with
a strange seductive wiggle. She's like a newbie to automobiles. Also, she
is staring in a curious fashion at some drunken revellers in the car park
nearby. I turn the ignition key. The 400 cu. in. engine fires up. I engage
music and drop the clutch.
Strangeness is everywhere.
My passenger remains motionless. I am trying to rearrange my brain.
"Nice transport" (she says)
(might as well have said 'Quaint'. What's she used to?)
"You were telling me where you're from?"
"Yeh, Sure was. I'm from...Uh, ...from far away" (she says)
(There is a pause. My already shredded nerves unravel still further).
"...Verr far away.."
"Yeh? Like how far?" (I hang a left to dodge some aggressive pedestrians)
"You said u are a writer?" (she says)
"Yeh"
(I nod my head, trying to keep it simple. I still haven't figured out her
accent.)
"Do you believe in what u write?"
(Oh no, A serious question. This is bad because I am constrained to answer.
I try to compose an answer I'd believe while accelerating into the
traffic flow. Its not easy)
"Yeh, I believe that there are Civilisations on other planets that
have mastered interstellar travel. Maybe I even believe that they visit
us. I try to keep an open mind. There are a lot of crazies out there"
(I try not to sound like one of them).
"So you write about people from other planets?" (her voice easy
and natural, no stress.)
"Yeh"
"Would you like to meet one? "
"An alien?"
"Yeh!"
"Yes I would. A lot of people out there would"
"Do you find my accent strange" (she says), lifting the thought
out of my head.
"Yeh, What is it?" Her shimmery blonde hair plays havoc with my
driving skills.
"Ets crryo-teach's verrsion of English. Hadda learrn it inahelmet.
Know a' few more. FFrench, Italian, Spanich, Chinese. All much like basic.
'Cept the Chinese."
She spits the words out so fast I nearly miss the keywords. A helmet? Cryo-Teach?
BASIC? I'm shivering in reaction, but my mind has not seized up completely.
She is very pretty.
I go all the way and take her home.
Some months later, I get to give you the equivalent of a first grader's
outline of recent Galactic History.
More than a million years ago the outermost reaches of the 'Dead Star' cluster
collide with the Great Arm of the MENGEL-3 Galaxy. Some time later Element
115 is discovered and faster than light travel through warp space becomes
a reality. Interstellar travel is costly and dangerous but dominant species
begin to expand. The humanoid expansion grid eventually bands together and
becomes 'The Merkabian Empire'.
'The Great War' breaks out between the reptilian 'Uxot Federation' and various
humanoid bipedal cultures. Thousands of years of conflict ensue during which
time planets are destroyed and civilisations are wiped out. During the battle
for the element-rich, 'Twinne Yashtoor' system, Pterryxi hordes exit warp
space and throw themselves against the Merkabian battle line in a struggle
which rages over light years. This is the last, and bloodiest, space battle
of the 'Great War'. Both fleets are decimated. Warptroopers facing certain
death exit into deep space when their ships are destroyed. They continue
the conflict in bloody suit-to-suit vacuum combat. This eventually turns
into a personal battle for life support. Cycles pass. Many lights wink out.
A temporal event sequence occurs. A legendary race of advanced sentients
called 'Annedoti' unexpectedly appear in spaceships of shifting blue light
causing a sub-acoustic explosion and system malfunction for all combatants.
This is a period, about which, not much is known. Warptroopers are rescued
by strange blue beams and some later claim to have been resuscitated after
flat-lining. No inter-ship communication is permitted by the Annedoti but
many sentients both with and without personal communications equipment receive
strange messages. Opposing personnel get connected to each other. The spacer
legend of 'Xanctu', tells of the 'joining' across time and space experienced
by the survivors of 'Twinne Yashtoor'.
Many legends are born by the sudden intervention of the powerful and mysterious
amphibious species called, 'Annedoti'. No technical reason is ever found
to explain how the Annedoti siphoned power from thousands of warpships,
leaving just enough juice for life support. It is reported that the glowing
blue Annedoti mother ships changed to a horrifying orange color on bearing
cruel witness to blackened dead metal adorned with broken, spinning bodies
that scattered the starfield. It is has never been discovered how these
ships operate. The Annedoti thus mediate a stunned peace.
Not much is reliably known about what actually happened at Twinne Yashtoor,
or indeed what really caused radically opposed forces to form 'The Supreme
Council Of Nine', but it must be noted here that, because of the lack of
data, some galactic historians have only used the Annedoti as a model of
a technically superior race which provided fair witness between erstwhile
foes and have meanwhile left out that which cannot easily be explained.
However, they do report that, some solars after this 'event', another 'Gathering'
took place at Twinne Yashtoor. At this time 'The Universal Peace Charter'
of the The 'Supreme Council Of Nine' is reported to have been adopted by
all nine members of the council. 'The Galactic Clock' is reset.
A decamilennium of peace now begins. Those politicos who appreciate the
potential for trade gain ascendancy. Diplomatic contact with the Annedoti
hierarchy becomes sporadic. They make known the location of Izimbrri, their
home world, then fade completely from Galactic Politics. A race called the
Baracora appear to coexist with the Annedoti on Izimbrri. The Baracora negotiate
and handle all tourist enterprises on the planet. A pilgrimage to Izimbrri
is a spiritual experience but most tourists depart without actually seeing
one of the enigmatic Annedoti. There have been exceptions.
The uneasy peace reigns for a decamillennium until warpscience discovers
a new method of focusing warpdrives. The new warp translator units require
only a fraction of the rare and expensive Element 115 for operational needs.
Long distances quickly become safer and more economical. Acquisition of
new star systems again feature as a priority in the plans of Empire and
Federation. Both attempt to dominate the Council Of Nine at this time. In
the light of their severe losses in the 'Great War', the Pterryxi begin
reconsidering their alliance with the less than cheerful Draco and start
currying favour with the Merkabians, their erstwhile foes. The Pterryxi
seat at The Supreme Council Of Nine becomes an uncertain one.
Strange light beings from the seventh dimension open an inter-dimensional
doorway in Ardathia's trinary Star System. This 'doorway' to the celestial
dimensions of the Godmind manifests itself at the exact location of the
interrelated gravity centers of Archalem's three-star-system (trinary) in
the form of a multidimensional planet sized prism.
Hypgnosists become Intergalactic Illuminati and travel from planet to planet
sowing seeds of freedom, entrenching positive patterns into the local population's
social structures.
The Spacer legend of Xanctu spreads.
The Council of Nine begins to fragment.
Both Merkabian and Uxot invasion fleets impatiently orbit unhappy planets
and await command directives (and co-ordinates) before beginning the first
stage of invading 'The Galaxy Of The Younger Stars'. The bipedal humanoid
expansion grid is aligned against that of the Reptoid's. Strategists on
both sides carefully await their advantage.
At the outer reaches of the Galaxy Of The Younger Stars, in the star system
of Soleil, the garrison on Trixas, the system's tenth planet, nervously
awaits a two-pronged invasion which will surely herald the start of an intergalactic
war between Merkabian and Uxot interests.
At the outer reaches of the 'Younger Stars' lies a single yellow dwarf star.
The spectral intensity radiated by its surface gases are at wavelengths
near 5000 angstroms, giving it a characteristic yellow color. The isolated
system is comprised of ten planets. One has created life. Earth. Third planet
out from Soleil. Inhabited by many different creatures but dominated by
a sentient bipedal humanoid species known as, 'homo sapiens', 'humans',
or sometimes just 'man'. Though sporadic landings have taken place, for
various reasons, 'man' is almost completely ignorant of Galactic culture.
This has been the case for more than ten thousand solars.
200 million miles out from Earth at the limits of the system is a bleak
oversized asteroid called Trixas. It is not yet visible to the inhabitants
of Earth. Trixas, the undiscovered Tenth Planet, has been the enforcer of
a socioeconomic blockade of Teraa for a decamillennium, and, until very
recently, neutral territory, only loyal to the Supreme Council of Nine.
Soleil itself is an enclave declared at the very inception of the Supreme
Council of Nine at the end of the 'Great War' for reasons lost in the mists
of time.
As offworld contact with Teraa is expressly prohibited in the original 'Universal
Charter' of the Council Of Nine, (until such time as certain undisclosed
provisions have been made), any conflict in this sector will signal the
collapse of both Council and Charter, and effectively nullify ten thousand
solars of peace.
It will also rudely prod the planet Teraa from the status of protected and
ignorant Rim enclave, to one of, 'vassal planet'.
At the time of writing "The Universal Peace Charter" still stands.
Put yourself in a situation.
Clear your mind.
Track back to the point.
BASIC.
A science fiction term for intergalactic multispeak lingo? Or, a common
tongue between Xenotypes of different origins?
UFO's
Fiction?
Or, Fact?
You decide.
